В статье дается очерк жизни и творчества первой афро-американской поэтессы Филис Уитли (1753? –1784), анализируются восприятие и оценка ее творчества, начиная от прижизненной критики до современности, прослеживается, как менялась (порой радикально) в зависимости от идеологических установок литературная репутация Уитли по мере становления и развития афроамериканских исследований – от 1960-х к 2010-м гг., делается попытка на основе взвешенного историко-литературного подхода оценить место и роль личности и поэзии Уитли в литературной и культурной истории США.
