Abstract:

In the article a Russian researcher recounts his discovery of Truman Capote’s early short stories and poems in the funds of the New York Public Library in 2014, as well as the history of the creation of the short story Mill Store (1940–1942). The paper analyzes the influence of biographical details which underlie the plot of the story on the origin and meaning of the snake leitmotif in the writer’s subsequent works.
