Jorge Amado and the Soviet Union. Notes on the Topic

- Abstract:
The situation in the USSR before 1956 was quite favorable for the publication of Jorge Amado's works both on the part of the higher echelons of power, and on the part of literary institutions and the intelligentsia that could choose and recommend foreign writers. With the editorial centralization in the Soviet Union, neither the market nor sales defined publishing decisions, but the prevailing ideology; therefore in the present study the concept of gatekeeper plays an important role. The paper analyses through archival documents and other sources the reasons why the post– 1956 events provoked much uncertainty and doubts concerning the publication of Amado’s works. This article presents a very small part of the research carried out by the author for her doctoral thesis in several Russian and Brazilian archives on Amador's Soviet contacts, and is therefore a selection of episodes made to fit in the format of this publication.
